Two Silicon Valley tech giants, Cisco and Oracle, have submitted documents to the California government confirming that they will launch a new round of layoffs on October 13th.

The following are the details of layoffs reported by Cisco and Oracle to the California Department of Employment Development (EDD):

According to the Warning notice, Cisco Systems will cut 221 jobs, including 157 jobs in Milpitas and 64 jobs in San Francisco.

The Warning notification document confirms that Oracle has laid off over 300 employees in Washington and California. The layoffs include 143 employees in Redwood City, California and an additional 161 employees in Seattle, Washington. But there may be further layoffs, but these layoffs are not covered by the Warning notice.

According to foreign media reports, multiple informed sources have revealed to the media that global tech giant Oracle is pushing for layoffs in its cloud computing business unit, and affected employees have received notices this week. This layoff is seen as an important measure by Oracle to optimize operating costs and improve organizational efficiency in the context of continued investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

It is reported that Oracle's current round of layoffs covers multiple teams in the cloud computing department, but the specific proportion and regional distribution of layoffs are not yet clear. Two individuals emphasized that the departure of some employees is directly linked to the annual performance evaluation results, and Oracle may take this opportunity to eliminate inefficient positions while retaining talent in core strategic areas.

This is not a comprehensive contraction, but a targeted optimization, "said a source close to Oracle." The company is still recruiting high-end engineers for AI related projects, but hopes the team will be more streamlined. ”

Just a few days before the layoffs, Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins had just stated that the company would not be laying off employees to support artificial intelligence (AI). A Cisco executive stated, "All affected employees have not joined a union and do not have any demotion rights applicable to their positions

I don't want to lay off a large number of people right now. I don't want to lay off engineers, "Chuck Robbins said. I just hope that our existing engineers can innovate faster, improve efficiency, and give us a competitive advantage

Chuck Robbins said that if Cisco's AI continues to develop, the company may reduce its recruitment of employees. Cisco has not yet responded to requests for comment on the latest round of layoffs.
