On October 20th, Tang Jianguo, Chief Economist of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, announced on a Beijing TV news program that Xiaomi has successfully produced the first domestically produced 3-nanometer process mobile phone system level chip, marking a significant breakthrough for Xiaomi in the field of self-developed mobile phone chips.

The so-called chip fabrication refers to the production of chips through a series of process steps like an assembly line. Simply put, chip companies hand over the designed solutions to wafer manufacturers, who produce a small number of samples to test whether the designed chips can be used. Based on the test results, they decide whether to optimize or mass produce them. In order to test whether the integrated circuit design is successful, it is necessary to perform chip fabrication, which is also an important reason why chip design companies generally need to invest a lot of cost in the early stage.

Previously, Apple launched the 3nm A17 Pro chip in September 2023, followed by MediaTek's release of the Dimensity 9400, and the vivo X200 series became the first Android phone to be equipped with this chip. And Xiaomi's success this time indicates that the Android camp has fully entered the 3nm era.

Although Xiaomi's 3nm chip is only in the stage of successful chip fabrication and still needs some time before mass production, its success has attracted widespread attention in the industry. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun once emphasized the importance of self-developed chips and stated that he will invest in core technology research and development for the long term.

Wang Teng, Deputy General Manager of Xiaomi's China Marketing Department, revealed that Xiaomi's flagship phone will adopt 3nm chips and therefore increase its price. At the same time, he also stated that Xiaomi is actively preparing for new product releases, with significant improvements in product positioning and specifications. With the continuous deepening of Xiaomi's self-developed chips, its performance in smartphones and other fields is worth looking forward to in the future.
