On December 19th, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, investigators from the US Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, and Department of Justice have launched an investigation into Chinese router brand TP Link, citing national security issues. It is expected that TP Link may be banned from selling routers in the United States by 2025.

If realized, this would be the largest withdrawal of Chinese telecommunications equipment from the US market since the Trump administration ordered the removal of Huawei devices in 2019.

A letter seen by Reuters shows that in August of this year, two US lawmakers urged the Biden administration to investigate Chinese router manufacturers and their subsidiaries because they were concerned that their WiFi routers could be used to launch cyber attacks against the United States.

According to reports, the US Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, and Department of Justice have launched investigations into the company, with the goal of banning the sale of TP Link routers in the United States as early as next year.

According to insiders, a department of the US Department of Commerce has even issued a subpoena to the company, while the Department of Defense launched an investigation into Chinese made routers earlier this year.

Last year, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency stated that there was a vulnerability in TP Link routers that could be exploited to execute remote code.

The US Department of Commerce, Department of Justice, Department of Defense, and TP Link did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

The report further pointed out that whether the ban on TP Link routers will really be put into action may ultimately be decided by the incoming Trump administration. During Trump's previous term, he imposed various bans on numerous Chinese technology companies, including Huawei.

Regarding the allegations and concerns from the US side, a spokesperson for TP Link Systems stated that the company "welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with the US government to demonstrate that its security practices fully comply with industry safety standards and demonstrate its ongoing commitment to the US market and American consumers. TP Link Systems is a US company that underwent a name change in July of this year.
